SHELTERS FOR THE URBAN HOMLESS / MIGRANTS, BHUJ
Taking forward its program with urban poor, Hunnarshala started working with urban migrants in the city of Bhuj. Homes in the City (HIC) helmed a study of migrants in the city which was supported by the students of Urban Policy and Governance Department, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. The study stated a fluctuating population of about 2,000 migrants around the city.

Urban homeless persons who live without shelter or social security/ protection are the most vulnerable class, even while they contribute towards sustaining cities with their cheap labour. Life on the streets involves surviving continuously at the edge, in a physically brutalized and challenging environment. There is a need for appropriate policy intervention to address the challenges faced by homeless people, with regard to shelter, social housing and social protection. A rental housing stock being managed by a local organisation was envisaged as the solution and a proposal for the same was prepared and discussed with the municipality here. Ajeevika, an organisation working with migrant workers in Rajasthan was also invited, and is now supporting the program. However, a new site has been alotted for the shelter by the Collector, on which a new proposal is currently being worked on keeping the core idea same, and is expected to be submitted soon.
