DEMONSTRATION HOUSE AFTER BAM EARTHQUAKE, IRAN
The 2003 Bam earthquake struck the Kerman province of south-eastern Iran on December 26. The shock had a magnitude of 6.6 on Richter scale and was particularly destructive in Bam, with the death toll amounting to at least 26,271 people and injuring up to 30,000. The effects of the earthquake were exacerbated by non-compliance of buildings with earthquake regulations set in 1989. Responding to a request from the Peace Foundation, Japan, Hunnarshala team went to Bam to demonstrate earthquake safe construction. |
Bam being famous for its rammed earth construction, and the construction of vaults and domes, it was decided that one of the demonstration structures would be done using rammed earth and semi circular domes. The second structure was done with brick masonry and a jack arch roof. This eventually became the office for the Housing Foundation of Bam which handled the rehabilitation work.
For this project, a portable rammed earth formwork was also developed. |
